PALO ALTO, Calif. — A free online course at Stanford University on artificial intelligence, to be taught this fall by two leading experts from Silicon Valley, has attracted more than 58,000 students around the globe — a class nearly four times the size of Stanford’s entire student body.

The course is one of three being offered experimentally by the Stanford computer science department to extend technology knowledge and skills beyond this elite campus to the entire world, the university is announcing on Tuesday.
The online students will not get Stanford grades or credit, but they will be ranked in comparison to the work of other online students and will receive a “statement of accomplishment.”
For the artificial intelligence course, students may need some higher math, like linear algebra and probability theory, but there are no restrictions to online participation. So far, the age range is from high school to retirees, and the course has attracted interest from more than 175 countries.
The instructors are Sebastian Thrun and Peter Norvig, two of the world’s best-known artificial intelligence experts. In 2005 Dr. Thrun led a team of Stanford students and professors in building a robotic car that won a Pentagon-sponsored challenge by driving 132 miles over unpaved roads in a California desert. More recently he has led a secret Google project to develop autonomous vehicles that have driven more than 100,000 miles on California public roads.
Dr. Norvig is a former NASA scientist who is now Google’s director of research and the author of a leading textbook on artificial intelligence.
The computer scientists said they were uncertain about why the A.I. class had drawn such a large audience. Dr. Thrun said he had tried to advertise the course this summer by distributing notices at an academic conference in Spain, but had gotten only 80 registrants.
Then, several weeks ago he e-mailed an announcement to Carol Hamilton, the executive director of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence. She forwarded the e-mail widely, and the announcement spread virally.
The two scientists said they had been inspired by the recent work of Salman Khan, an M.I.T.-educated electrical engineer who in 2006 established a nonprofit organization to provide video tutorials to students around the world on a variety of subjects via YouTube.
“The vision is: change the world by bringing education to places that can’t be reached today,” said Dr. Thrun.
The rapid increase in the availability of high-bandwidth Internet service, coupled with a wide array of interactive software, has touched off a new wave of experimentation in education.
For example, the Khan Academy, which focuses on high school and middle school, intentionally turns the relationship of the classroom and homework upside down. Students watch lectures at home, then work on problem sets in class, where the teacher can assist them one on one.
The Stanford scientists said they were focused on going beyond early Internet education efforts, which frequently involved uploading online videos of lectures given by professors and did little to motivate students to do the coursework required to master subjects.
The three online courses, which will employ both streaming Internet video and interactive technologies for quizzes and grading, have in the past been taught to smaller groups of Stanford students in campus lecture halls. Last year, for example, Introduction to Artificial Intelligence drew 177 students.
The two additional courses will be an introductory course on database software, taught by Jennifer Widom, chairwoman of the computer science department, and an introduction to machine learning, taught by Andrew Ng.
Dr. Widom said she had recorded her video lectures during the summer and would use classroom sessions to work with smaller groups of students on projects that might be competitive and to bring in people from the industry to give special lectures. Unlike the A.I. course, this one will compare online students with one another and not with the Stanford students.
How will the artificial intelligence instructors grade 58,000 students? The scientists said they would make extensive use of technology. “We have a system running on the Amazon cloud, so we think it will hold up,” Dr. Norvig said.
In place of office hours, they will use the Google moderator service, software that will allow students to vote on the best questions for the professors to respond to in an online chat and possibly video format. They are considering ways to personalize the exams to minimize cheating. Part of the instructional software was developed by Know Labs, a company Dr. Thrun helped start.
Although the three courses are described as an experiment, the researchers say they expect university classes to be made more widely accessible via the Internet.
“I personally would like to see the equivalent of a Stanford computer science degree on the Web,” Dr. Ng said.
Dr. Widom said that having Stanford courses freely available could both assist and compete with other colleges and universities. A small college might not have the faculty members to offer a particular course, but could supplement its offerings with the Stanford lectures.
There has also been some discussion at Stanford about whether making the courses freely available would prove to be a threat to the university, which charges high fees for tuition. Dr. Thrun dismissed that idea.
“I’m much more interested in bringing Stanford to the world,” he said. “I see the developing world having colossal educational needs.”
Hal Abelson, a computer scientist at M.I.T. who helped develop an earlier generation of educational offerings that began in 2002, said the Stanford course showed how rapidly the online world was evolving.
“The idea that you could put up open content at all was risky 10 years ago, and we decided to be very conservative,” he said. “Now the question is how do you move into something that is more interactive and collaborative, and we will see lots and lots of models over the next four or five years.”

Cada vez más voces aseguran que Facebook ha llegado a su cénit. Y según un reciente estudio internacional de la empresa de investigación de mercados Gartner, esta afirmación parece tener una base real.
Para la realización del informe,Gartner entrevistó a más de 6.000 internautas de 11 países. El 24% de los 
consultados, fundamentalmente usuarios muy afines a las nuevas tecnologías, admitió conectarse a su red social favorita con menos frecuencia que al principio.
Asimismo, el 31% de los consultados, internautas jóvenes y afines a la tecnología móviles y a las marcas, reconoció haberse cansado de las redes sociales.
El hartazgo de los internautas varía, de todas formas, en función de su nacionalidad. En Japón, Reino Unido y Estados Unidos, una quinta de los parte de los internautas se conecta a las redes social con menos frecuencia que al comienzo del “boom 2.0”. Sin embargo, el 40% de los usuarios siguen siendo fieles a Facebook y compañía.
Los más cansados de la Web Social son los rusos y los brasileños. Así, el 40% de los internautas de Rusia y el 30% de los usuarios de Brasil admiten utilizar las redes sociales con menos asiduidad que hace unos meses.

Chile encabeza mantuvo el primer lugar en América Latina en el uso de tecnologías de la información(TI), de acuerdo al Indicador de la Sociedad de la Información (ISI), al alcanzar un puntaje de 5,70, lo que representó un aumento de 5,8% respecto al 2010.
El estudio, desarrollado por la consultora multinacional de negocio y tecnología Everis y la Universidad de Navarra, indica que Chile podría ser el primer país de la región en superar a uno de la Unión Europea, pues Portugal tiene un promedio de avance de 5,73 puntos en la materia.

RESULTADOS

Según la muestra, uno de los factores que impulsó el resultado fue el crecimiento del número de aparatos de telefonía móvil cada mil habitantes, que llega a 1.155, un 18% más que en el periodo anterior (primer trimestre de 2010).
A su vez, el parque de computadores aumentó hasta las 429 unidades cada mil habitantes (incremento del 14%), con lo que Chile se ubicó muy cerca de España, país que dispone de 433 ordenadores cada mil habitantes.
José Gamboa, socio de everis business consulting, señaló “lo beneficioso que será para el estudio la incorporación y medición de países desarrollados, pues permitirá comparase con los que nos llevan la delantera”.
“Latinoamérica está progresando a paso firme en la reducción del acceso a las Tecnologías de la Información y Comunicación (TIC) y sin duda esas son buenas noticias. Asimismo, hoy podemos decir con propiedad que Chile podría convertirse en el primer país de la región en superar en el ISI a un estadomiembro de la Unión Europea”, precisó.

VENTAS ONLINE

En las ventas minoristas online, variable Chile registró un nivel de US$142 dólares per cápita (aumento del 56,5% interanual), con lo que triplica el promedio latinoamericano (US$49 al año por persona), debido al aumento de la población conectada a Internet, a la extensión de las alternativas de pago y al incremento de la bancarización de los ciudadanos.
Sin embargo, el número de usuarios de Internet (grupo que llegó a 360 usuarios cada mil habitantes) y el número de abonados al servicio de banda ancha fija de Chile (104 abonados cada mil habitantes) se incrementó en Chile a un ritmo menor que el resto de los países de la región.
A su vez, Chile fue el único país donde aumentó la puntuación de los cuatro componentes del ISI. Entre ellos, fue el componente social el que más se acrecentó, como consecuencia directa del descenso en la tasa de desempleo.

OTROS PAÍSES

De los países latinoamericanos que participaron en el estudio, además de Chile, Argentina obtuvo 4,68 puntos; seguido por Perú (4,57); México (4,45); Brasil (4,36) y Colombia (4,30 puntos).
En la Unión europea los resultados generales fueron los siguientes: Reino Unido lidera con 8,18 puntos, seguido de Alemania (8,02); Bélgica (7,38); Francia (6,98); Italia (6,48); España (6,07) y Portugal (5,73). Por último, Estados unidos registró 8,22 puntos en el indicador, el más alto de todos los países analizados.

Psychologists explore myths, realities and offer guidance for parents
WASHINGTON—Social media present risks and benefits to children but parents who try to secretly monitor their kids’ activities online are wasting their time, according to a presentation at the 119th Annual Convention of the American Psychological Association.
“While nobody can deny that Facebook has altered the landscape of social interaction, particularly among young people, we are just now starting to see solid psychological research demonstrating both the positives and the negatives,” said Larry D. Rosen, PhD, professor of psychology at California State University, Dominguez Hills.
In a plenary talk entitled, “Poke Me: How Social Networks Can Both Help and Harm Our Kids,” Rosen discussed potential adverse effects, including: 
  • Teens who use Facebook more often show more narcissistic tendencies while young adults who have a strong Facebook presence show more signs of other psychological disorders, including antisocial behaviors, mania and aggressive tendencies.  
  • Daily overuse of media and technology has a negative effect on the health of all children, preteens and teenagers by making them more prone to anxiety, depression, and other psychological disorders, as well as by making them more susceptible to future health problems.
    • Facebook can be distracting and can negatively impact learning. Studies found that middle school, high school and college students who checked Facebook at least once during a 15-minute study period achieved lower grades. 
Rosen said new research has also found positive influences linked to social networking, including: 
  • Young adults who spend more time on Facebook are better at showing “virtual empathy” to their online friends. 
  • Online social networking can help introverted adolescents learn how to socialize behind the safety of various screens, ranging from a two-inch smartphone to a 17-inch laptop. 
  • Social networking can provide tools for teaching in compelling ways that engage young students.
For parents, Rosen offered guidance. “If you feel that you have to use some sort of computer program to surreptitiously monitor your child's social networking, you are wasting your time. Your child will find a workaround in a matter of minutes,” he said. “You have to start talking about appropriate technology use early and often and build trust, so that when there is a problem, whether it is being bullied or seeing a disturbing image, your child will talk to you about it.”
He encouraged parents to assess their child’s activities on social networking sites, and discuss removing inappropriate content or connections to people who appear problematic. Parents also need to pay attention to the online trends and the latest technologies, websites and applications children are using, he said.  
“Communication is the crux of parenting. You need to talk to your kids, or rather, listen to them,” Rosen said. “The ratio of parent listen to parent talk should be at least five-to-one. Talk one minute and listen for five.”

John Leso fue demandado por prestar asesorías en técnicas "abusivas y dañinas".
Jueza determinó que el Estado no tiene jurisdicción sobre las actividades del profesional.


Grupos de defensa de los derechos civiles en Estados Unidos criticaron este viernes la decisión de la jueza de Nueva York Saliann Scarpulla de no investigar si John Leso, un psicólogo implicado en el desarrollo detécnicas abusivas en los interrogatorios a detenidos de Guantánamo, violó su código de ética profesional.

"El dictamen es desafortunado", indicaron elCentro de Justicia y Responsabilidad (CJA, por su sigla en inglés) y la American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), en un comunicado de prensa conjunto.
Ambos grupos respaldaron la demanda presentada por el también psicólogo Steven Reisner contra John Leso por haber asesorado a las autoridades de Guantánamo sobre técnicas "abusivas y dañinas" como privación de sueño o alimentos, o el uso de grilletes, celdas de aislamiento y perros para sacar información a los reos.
Reisner primero intentó que el estado de Nueva York retirara a Leso la licencia para ejercer como psicólogo, y cuando esa moción fue rechazada por la autoridad competente, entonces acudió de nuevo a los tribunales para pedir una investigación.
Sin embargo, la jueza Scarpulla determinó que no se puede obligar al Estado a realizar las pesquisas al considerar que no tiene jurisdicción sobre las actividades del psicólogo en Guantánamo.

Google+ was a bit of a breaking point for me. After recreating my online social network ( largely based on blogs from early 2000) in Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, and Quora, G+ was a chore. I spent a few weeks of responding to G+ friend requests, trying to engage with a few people, posting a few random links, all the while trying to upkeep (occasionally) Twitter and (almost never) Facebook. I’ve concluded that most of the hype around social media is nonsense and that people, particularly the self-proclaimed social media elite are clothing-less. Sure, I’ll still continue to participate in those spaces periodically – as soon as this post is done, I’ll tweet it and share it on G+. Beyond that, however, social media is getting credit for things it’s merely flowing, not actually creating.
A few things over the last few weeks have helped to crystallize this view.
First, I saw this very silly post by Jeff Jarvis, pretending that a hashtag was the equivalent of a power movement. For me, this was a threshold moment where the noise of social media and the actual impact were starkly contrasted. The notion that a hashtag=power or theno one owns a hashtag appeal to power and fairness is absolute and utter nonsense. And reveals just how vacuous power social media users are in their orientation. Washington faces a debt crisis. How do the insular self-perceived new media elites respond? “oh, let’s create a hashtag”. It’s rubbish. And it has no influence. Sure, it’s a good avenue to vent personal feelings and blow off steam. However, that is not a “movement” and it doesn’t influence policy. The notion of the Arab Spring being about social media is similarly misguided.
We are left then, with a small group elitist new media users, trying to build consultancy around the tools, and telling others how wonderful they are. What has social media actually done? Very, very little. The reason? Social media is about flow, not substance.
I’ve been blogging since 2000 and can attribute a numerous positives to this activity: I was hired at University of Manitoba because of my blog and bi-weekly newsletter. I was hired at Athabasca University for similar reasons. I have traveled to over 30 countries and delivered over 200 presentations in the last decade due to my transparent online presence: blogging, writing, teaching. What has Twitter and Facebook done for me? Nothing, really. Other than perhaps attending to my emotive needs of being connected to people when I’m traveling and whining.
Social media=emotions.
Blogging/writing/transparent scholarship=intellect.
Put another way, Twitter/Facebook/G+ are secondary media. They are a means to connect in crisis situations and to quickly disseminate rapidly evolving information. They are also great for staying connected with others on similar interests (Stanley Cup, Olympics). Social media is good for event-based activities. But terrible when people try to make it do more – such as, for example, nonsensically proclaiming that a hashtag is a movement. The substance needs to exist somewhere else (an academic profile, journal articles, blogs, online courses).
Secondly, science and discovery require deep thought, time, and focus. The enormous and complex problems faced by different societies around the world will not be solved by twitter, G+, or social media. As Google’s “in house philosopher” states:
Maybe you, too, are disposed toward critical thinking. Maybe, despite the comfort and security that your job offers, you, too, have noticed cracks in the technotopian bubble.
Maybe you are worn out by endless marketing platitudes about the endless benefits of your products; and you’re not entirely at ease with your contribution to the broader culture industry.
Maybe you are unsatisfied by oversimplifications in the product itself. What exactly is the relationship created by “friending” someone online? How can your online profile capture the full glory of your performance of self?
Maybe you are cautious about the impact of technology. You are startled that our social-entertainment Web sites are playing crucial roles in global revolutions. You wonder whether those new tools, like any weapons, can be used for evil as well as good, and you are reluctant to engage in the cultural imperialism that distribution of a technology arguably entails.
If you have ever wondered about any of those topics, and sensed that there was more to the story, you are on to something. Any of the topics could be the subject of a humanities dissertation—your humanities dissertation.
The technology issues facing us today—issues of identity, communication, privacy, regulation—require a humanistic perspective if we are to deal with them adequately. If you actually care about one of those topics—if you want to do something more serious about it than swap idle opinions over dinner—you can. And, I would venture, you must. Who else is going to take responsibility for getting it right?
This view – deep, contextualized awareness of complex interrelated entities (the hallmark of a a progressive or advancing society) – is strikingly antagonistic to the shallow platitudes and self-serving “look at me!” activities of social media gurus whose obsession is self-advancement. At best, they have become the reality TV/Fox News version of social commentary: lots of hype, lots of attention, void of substance, and, at best, damaging to the cause they purport to advance.
